Coalatree started out as a self-sustaining organic farm in Colorado. The farm focused around a "reap what you sow" mentality, and integrated sustainable practices with quality products. Wanting to create their own workwear, Coalatree first launched a line of clothing in 2010 and has continued on to the outdoor industry, all while maintaining roots in sustainably produced goods.

Coalatree prides themselves on making eco-friendly goods you can take anywhere. In every step of the design, manufacturing, and shipping process, they look for ways to be more sustainable and minimize their impact.

Most of Coalatree's goods are made from recycled or repurposed materials. Instead of creating new threads, they find discarded yarns and plastics, then melt them down and spin them into new fibers. The Trailhead Shorts, Pants, and Kachula Adventure Blanket are just a few items made this way.

They use a dye method that reduces energy and water waste at their factories. By using a "closed-loop" of CO2 vapors, they can reuse stored CO2 and circumvent the need for water to dye textiles.

Coalatree's factory partners are working towards zero emissions by incorporating sustainable energy use right into their buildings, such as water-saving machinery, low-impact ventilation, and solar lighting. Many of them have replaced areas of concrete and asphalt (which can become “heat islands”) with green spaces for employee relaxation, picnics, and even farming. The factory that makes the Trailhead Shorts and Pants even has an on-site wetland! Since dedicating part of their land to this wetland, they’ve seen an increase in local biodiversity with more birds, butterflies, earthworms, and bees.

Conventional manufacturing methods use toxic chemicals, produce hazardous waste, and contribute significantly to carbon emissions. Coalatree works only with facilities that are bluesign® approved, ensuring the highest standards are met in efficiency, safety, and clean manufacturing, so no harsh chemicals ever need to harm the environment. This includes the way they apply the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish to their products. Instead of conventional spraying and dipping, they apply a vapor coating which eliminates the need for those nasty chemicals.

Coalatree loves trees, too! And they want to keep forests healthy. Coalatree's hangtags and packaging are printed on recycled paper with post-consumer waste content, keeping trash out of landfills and preserving forests.

Since adopting a signature coffee grounds material in 2015, Coalatree has been able to save 139,878+ plastic bottles and 82,301+ cups of coffee grounds from landfills. When you purchase from Coalatree you are supporting the strive for a cleaner and more eco-friendly production cycle.

Coalatree is also committed to giving back to the local and global community. Each year they turn surplus fabric into warm blankets for the homeless in their hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah. They also partner with local organizations to maintain local hiking and biking trails and to protect the integrity of their watersheds.
