Our tea towels are made in Essaouira, a port city on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. The cotton itself comes from Egypt and woven in Essaouira in local mills. The black, white and grey striped designs are typical, and authentic to this area. Cotton is a natural fiber that allows air to circulate & move freely through the fabric, so it makes it a great material for drying and polishing glass, flatware and dishes.
Made with a double layer of Essaouira woven cotton which has been pre-washed, these tea towels have a distinct Moroccan feel by adding the tassels made in local women’s cooperatives. They are softer than linen and more absorbent than microfiber or other synthetic fabrics. We like to use the term tea towel rather than dish cloth! These have been made since the mid 18th century and used by women to dry their expensive china tea-cups and saucers – hence the name tea towel.
