LUCY’S STORY
Belize-raised founder and botanical alchemist Lucy Ashman is inspired by her passion for a healthy environment and Central America's natural beauty and extraordinary biodiversity. Ten years ago, she started making natural soaps, deodorant sticks, and lotion for luxury boutique hotels. Lucy’s reputation for creating beautiful, efficacious natural products quickly grew, and spas began asking her to make scrubs and herbal creams. Lucy’s career in tourism specializing in out-of-the-ordinary experiences, allowed her to develop relationships with many Guatemalan locals, who would teach her about their traditional sacred uses of local plants and minerals. Combining her certified nutrition education and peer-reviewed scientific studies with traditional Mayan healing practices, she developed skincare formulas using only the purest form of ingredients (aka just whole plants and minerals). As a result, Tierra & Lava now offers natural products with no fillers and only natural preservatives.

Tierra & Lava is closely tethered to the earth - “Tierra” is the Spanish word for earth, and “lava” is an homage to the 37 volcanoes in Guatemala that enrich the soil with the nutrients that grow their unique ingredients.
ZERO WASTE SKINCARE
Tierra & Lava is a zero-waste skincare company - unrecyclable plastics (such as some food wrappers) are repurposed into eco-bricks that are used as borders for their garden. About one eco-brick is produced every two weeks. A local recycling company, Reciclemos picks up any materials and by-products that can be easily recycled. Tierra & Lava buys in bulk to reduce waste and source as many local raw materials as possible to reduce the carbon footprint of unnecessary outsourcing from abroad.
CONSCIOUS PACKAGING
The principal packaging materials for their products are glass, aluminum, paper, and cardboard. In addition to these recyclable materials, they offer zero-waste bulk supply options to stores carrying their products and bulk refill options for hotel and spa amenities reducing the use of single-serving plastic. Finally, their gift presentation uses hand-spun, hand-dyed, and hand-woven cotton produced by a women's cooperative from Lake Atitlan.
Being located in Guatemala does, however, limit the options for sourcing materials. They are currently using plastic lids and pumps on a few products. But they are actively searching for zero-waste alternatives that won't require outsourcing to avoid increasing their carbon footprint.
ECO RESOURCES
Tierra & Lava uses a solar-powered server for their website and email. They also conserve water usage on-site by using a ‘loveable loo’ compost bathroom. All grey water is disposed of through a natural filtration system using different stones and gravel before feeding the property.
